Who We Help

Three signs it’s time to talk

01

The owner who never switches off

You’re working 60-70 hours a week. The business can’t run without you in the room. You haven’t taken a proper break in years.

02

Growing, but the profit isn’t

Revenue is up, but the money isn’t following. You’re busier than ever and no better off.

03

Thinking about selling one day

You want to step back or exit in a few years – but deep down, you know the business isn’t ready for a buyer.

04

Thinking about acquiring a business

You’re considering buying a company – but you need to be sure the deal is right, the integration is planned, and the risk is managed.

If any one of these sounds familiar – wherever you are in Ireland – we should talk.

The Businesses We Help

Built for Irish SMEs – from Series A+ start-ups to established businesses

We work with businesses across Ireland – from start-ups that have moved beyond the early idea stage to established companies with 5 to 50 employees – where the owner is stretched too thin, and whose structure hasn’t kept pace with growth.

Industries we work with include:

  • Trades & construction – plumbers, electricians, builders, carpenters
  • Financial services – financial advisors, mortgage brokers, wealth managers
  • Professional services – accountants, solicitors, consultants
  • Healthcare – dental practices, physiotherapy clinics, veterinary practices
  • Manufacturing & engineering
  • Technology & SaaS

If your industry isn’t listed but the problem sounds familiar, we should still talk. The challenges are almost always the same.

If you’re pre-seed or at the very early idea stage, we’d recommend Enterprise Ireland, your Local Enterprise Office or agileexecutives.ie (advice on grants) – they’re set up to help you get started. We come in once you’ve got traction and need to build the structure to support it.

If you’re also looking for independent board-level governance, see our Board Services.

If you want a partner who’ll help you build something that lasts, let’s talk.

How we help: our consulting approach

Five things we fix

Every engagement is different, but the pattern is almost always the same. The business is running through one person. We change that.

  1. 01

    Strategy

We take you through a structured process to build a strategy that’s specific to your business – not a blank-page brainstorming session. You’ll come out with a clear direction, defined priorities, and a plan you can actually execute.

  2. 02

    People

Build a proper structure so the team can make decisions without the owner. Right people, right roles.
For leadership-specific development, see our Leadership Services →

  3. 03

    Process

Map how the business actually runs. Then strip it back: automate what you can, eliminate what you don’t need, consolidate what’s duplicated, delegate what shouldn’t be yours. That’s how you stop being the bottleneck.

  4. 04

    Technology

Put in the systems that give you real visibility – instead of guessing.

  5. 05

    Finances

Get the numbers into shape, so you can see what’s making money, what’s not, and where you’re losing it.

The result: a business that went from “it all runs through me” to one that runs without the owner in the middle of everything.

Real Results

Consulting results: a real example

What this looks like in practice

An Irish business experiencing rapid growth was breaking on almost every front. We focused on three areas: financials, team engagement, and operating model.

€6 millionremoved from cost-to-serve in one financial year

50% → 20%staff attrition reduced from over 50% to under 20%

Zerocritical single-points-of-failure left across the business

The result: a more profitable, more resilient business – with far more predictable results, and an owner who got their time back.

The Book

Leadership Field Manual

by Hugh McCallum

Hugh spent 25 years watching good businesses get stuck – and it’s almost always the same reason. The person at the top is carrying the whole thing on their back.

Leadership Field Manual is the book he wrote to change that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from business owners

What does a business consultant actually do?

A business consultant works with you to identify what’s holding your business back, and helps you fix it. At Ridge Business Solutions, that typically means looking at five areas: strategy, people, process, technology and finances. The goal is a business that performs better, depends less on the owner, and is worth more.

How do I know if my business needs a consultant?

There are three common signs: you’re working 60-70 hours a week and the business can’t run without you; revenue is growing but profit isn’t following; or you’re thinking about selling or stepping back but the business isn’t ready. If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth having a conversation.

How much does business consulting cost in Ireland?

It depends on the scope and duration of the engagement. We work with established, profitable SMEs – typically 5 to 50 people – and our engagements are structured around the outcomes you need. The first step is always a no-obligation discovery call to understand your situation before any fees are discussed.

What's the difference between business consulting and business coaching?

Coaching focuses on developing you as a leader – your thinking, decision-making and personal effectiveness. Consulting focuses on the business itself – its strategy, structure, operations and finances. We offer both through our Consulting Services and Leadership Services, and many clients benefit from a combination of the two.

How long does a typical consulting engagement last?

Most engagements run over several months. We do structural work – building strategy, improving operations, developing teams – and that takes time to do properly. We’re not a quick-fix or a one-off report. If you want lasting change, that’s what we deliver.

Do you only work with businesses in Dublin?

No. We’re based in Dublin, Ireland, but work with business owners across the country and internationally. Most of our work is a combination of on-site visits and remote support, so location is rarely a barrier.

What size business do you work with?

Typically 5 to 50 employees – but it’s less about headcount and more about stage. We work with businesses that are profitable (or close to it), already have customers, and have hit the point where the way things are set up can’t support where they’re going. That includes Series A+ start-ups as well as established SMEs. If you’re at the very early idea stage, the resources linked above are a better fit.

Can you help me prepare my business for sale or exit?

Yes. Many of our clients come to us because they want to step back or exit in the next few years but know the business isn’t ready for a buyer. We help you reduce owner-dependence, improve profitability, and build the kind of structure that makes a business attractive – and valuable – to a buyer.

Can you help me prepare to purchase a business?

Absolutely. We work with business owners before, during and after an acquisition – from assessing whether the deal makes strategic sense, through due diligence, to planning the integration so you don’t lose value on day one. If you’re thinking about buying, talk to us before you commit.

What happens on a discovery call?

It’s a no-obligation conversation, usually 60 minutes. We’ll ask about your business, what’s working, what’s not, and where you want to get to. If we can help, we’ll explain how. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll say so.

After the call, we’ll put together a short proposal outlining the recommended approach and fees. That’s also no-obligation – it’s simply there to give you a clear picture of what working together would look like, so you can make an informed decision. No pressure, ever.
